A Curl Serum?
Davines Curl Building Serum took me by surprise.
Styling products used to go like this; cream, mousse, gel. That was also the order in which I tried them.
When I first started wearing my hair curly, cream seemed the most intuitive and then I tried mousse to see what it did.
Gel for curly hair? That took a bit more convincing, but of course, I tried it. A combination of these products has made up my routine for the last couple of years.
Knowing my love of new hair products, a couple of months ago, my friend Chloe kindly posted a box of goodies. The product that immediately caught my eye was Davines Curl Building Serum. A curl serum.
That was the first time I had come across a serum with a purpose to style. I’ve got a great serum for smoothing and heat protection, the usual. Curiosity for the better of me, and it was the first product I tried.
I also want to mention the unassuming bottle. Yes, it’s gold, but the label is delicate with tiny writing and looks almost homemade. I love how unpretentious it is.
How do you use it?
I casually scrunched it into soaking wet hair—just the one product to see what it did on its own.
Can I be honest? I didn’t expect much to happen; I couldn’t see how a serum would hold a curl or wave. In retrospect, the name should have been a giveaway. ‘Curl Building Serum’. Boy, does it build.
Like a normal serum, the consistency is runny, but it creates a cast as your hair dries.
I diffused and scrunched the cast away, and, just like that, curl building serum was product no. 1 in my collection.
It would be easy to argue that the serum is like a light gel, but to my mind, it actually achieves more than a gel.
Let’s talk curl types for a sec.
I’m not a huge fan of the 2/3/4 curl type system, but I’m going to use it here for a sec to explain what I mean.
I consider myself between 2C and 3A, which means waves and loose curls. My curl pattern varies throughout my hair. It means that due to my love of curls, I’m often looking to enhance my curl pattern. I like curly hair, and I like big hair.
My ultimate goal is to make my curls more defined and add volume.
When Davines say that this product builds curls, they aren’t kidding.
What’s even more interesting is that, from further research, I’ve realised that the more I scrunch, the more it builds curls. Seriously. Since that first try, I’ve used it EVERY time I’ve worn my hair curly.
The more I scrunch, the more it builds curls.
This is where curl type comes in. Full disclosure; if you have a strong 3B or higher curl pattern, Davines Curl Building Serum may not give you the hold you want, and you probably won’t find it that different to a light gel.
For me, the beauty is in the way it enhances curls.
I’ve also refreshed with it. I sprayed a piece of hair with water, and then I added a drop of the serum and went to town with the scrunching. It works a treat.
I’ve since used it alongside my favourite leave-in conditioner, and this is my go-to routine.
My hair also looks good on the days after wash-day. Even if my curls lose a bit of definition, I still love the way it looks.
A Quick Look At The Ingredients
Curly Girl Friendly? It isn’t. However, if you are ok with this, I would like to mention that it contains amodimethicone – an intelligent silicone that helps repair damaged, porous hair and won’t build up on itself.
A beneficial ingredient that most shampoos can remove.
What’s The Brand Story?
I love this story. Davines is an Italian research lab-turned-manufacturer of high-end beauty products.
I feel more glamourous already.
I highly recommend Davines Curl Building Serum. Use it to enhance your curls and give them definition.
Scrunch, scrunch, scrunch and enjoy bouncy curls!
